BONNEVILLE
"Proof that God loves us, and wants us to go fast"
2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | HOME
Back on the salt and proof that Delvene is still desperate for volunteers.

This is Glen, Glen has been on the track control crew from the very first
BUB event.

This is Mel, Mel normally cuts down trees for a living so he loves Bonneville
because there ain't a tree in sight.

The Vincent liner gets a make over and looks better than ever!

The extreme scooter boyz!
They went over 100 MPH on this standup scooter!

The morning pep talk from Ken to the track crew.

The view from the 8 mile looking west at Wendover.

Looking south at Interstate 80 from the 8 mile.

Dad needs a pipe.

The BUDDFAB 50cc liner is back.

The Ack Attack is back.

This Buell Looks fast!

The Rules for "Side car" have many different definitions.
This is a real one!

A bike going through tech inspection
Before any bike can race on the track it must go through a Tech inspection
to verify that:
Number #1 it is safe to run on the track and
#2 that is legal for the class it is running in.

The California Fritz liner ready for Tech.

If you go over 200 mph at Bonneville you get a red
hat.
This machine was built from the ground up to get one of those hats.

Butch Cook with this over the top cool Indian.

BUB addresses the riders before the event.

Every year we get bigger and more generators.

The 2nd worst rental I have ever had for the event..

If you say on the radio "I will be off the air for 1 minute" Than
means #1.
If you say "I will be off the air for 2 minutes"
That means the old # 2

Here is a little tip: Never buy a used rental car! You might get one of ours.

You don't get to sit down very often so you take any chance you get.

Riders taking a tour of the track before the first day of racing starts.

The salt started out a little wet and sticky but got better every day.

The Ancient Lady comes all the way from Canada, A.
These guys get amazing results from this little antique bike, A.

Here I have a rider staged on the track and I am listening for the "Coarse
is clear" signal from the tower.
I hide the green flag behind my leg so there is no confusion between me and
the rider.
At our event we race in both directions. If someone screws up you could have
2 riders on coarse headed straight for each other.
This would be bad.
I have told many a rider that "I do not care if the lord all-mighty comes
down from the Heavens and tells you to go! If God is not waving a green flag
in a figure 8 pattern you do not move!
This is the Ack Attack passing the 8 mile on a world record breaking return run.
This picture may not look like much, but less than 30 seconds after this picture was taken, The record for "Worlds Fastest Motorcycle" that had stood for 16 years would fall.
The old record had stood at 322.149 mph set by the Easy Rider Streamliner in 1990. The Ack Attack 2 way average of 342.797 MPH shattered the old record by more than 20 MPH
This was also the first time I have ever seen anything going over 300 MPH!
I realized right then that some truly historic stuff was happening and I was right in the middle of it!
I could not even imagine what was to come.
The 2006 Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB will go down in the history books as one of the most exciting LSR events of all time.

This is our friend Butch Cook from Oregon.
Butch comes to the event every year and sets records with bikes like this
Kawasaki Vulcan.
Cool video with an all star cast

.

This shot is at the end of the day and you try to "wind proof" your
station.

This picture needs no explanation.
(You either get it or you don't)

The Pits at sunrise!

Stations! Stations everyone!

The BUB "Seven" streamliner sits on the salt awaiting her pilot
Chris Carr.
Chris Carr is a 7 time national flat track racer and Motorcycle Hall of Famer.
When the Ack Attack broke the record Chris was racing at the legendary Springfield
Mile.
The Man inspecting the rear wheel faring would be Mr. Tom Burkland.

The Motec display seen here is usually seen in Formula One race cars.
The control stalks used to steer the bike are from a F4 Phantom.
The bottle at the bottom of the picture is attached to the cool suit Chris
wares under his fire suit.

Arch looking very guilty of something!

I just love this shot!
The shape of the BUB Seven is largely taken from the shape of a Coho salmon
and it shows.

Dad looking very official

Me....not so much

Ok, who wants to go for a ride?

This is one very fast side car!
The fact that the rider has no legs is one one of the finest testament's to
the spirit and courage of a
Bonneville racer / competitor that I have ever seen.

This is that "I'm gona get me one of those damn red
hats" bike again.
By the way he did!

This Harley was ridden by Jay Allen.
Jay is the owner of the Broken
Spoke Saloon in Sturgis.
The rules say you have to have leather gloves that protect your hands and
wrists.
Jay's also had 6 inch long leather fringe!
Buell Brothers Racing
These guys do so much for Land Speed Racing and the Save the Salt Foundation
I would not know where to start.
The gentleman grabbing his crotch is Santa Clause (It says so on his business card).
Santa is an urban legend on the salt.
This is one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken on the salt. The man Santa is talking to is Patrick.
Patrick used his vacation time from work to come to the 2006 International Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB. Patrick came all the way from Belgium!
Dad and I first met Patrick when he showed up at our at our station with one of the worst sunburns I have ever seen!
Dad and I gave him some Sun Block and kept him in the shade for a while. Patrick turned out to be a really nice guy and I hope can make it back some day.

Ken the "Z MAN" with this blown Sportster named Young Sporty

This is Wink. Wink is a very well known custom bike builder and has appeared
on several Biker Build Off shows.

Going to work in the morning.

This is the Easy Rider streamliner.
This bike had held the world record for 16 years.
By the end of the 2006 event, that record would be broken twice and we would
see the fastest one way pass ever for a motorcycle by Sam Wheeler at over
356 MPH!

Medusa
The motor of the "Seven" streamliner is a one of a kind, designed
and built from scratch, turbo charged, 3 liter V Four.
The swing arm is C&C cut from a solid block of Aluminum and the fender
is carbon fiber. The horizontal bar attached to the swing arm pivot is the
anchoring point for the parachutes.

Chris going by the 8 mile with the shoot out on what was supposed to be a
shake down run.
It turns out the Motec display was not calibrated properly so when Chris thought
he was going around 325 MPH he was actually making the fastest pass ever for
a motorcycle at over 354 MPH.

Valerie Thompson
I don't care what Butch says, she was just signing my shirt.
Seriously, Valerie is one of the most dedicated competitors I have ever met.
She holds 2 land speed records at Bonneville and is currently the
10th woman to ever compete at the Pro Stock Motorcycle level in the NHRA!
Go #20
Check out her website Here

This picture is cool, Butch, Belen and Valerie have all qualified to make
return runs for their records.
To qualify for a return run your first run must be within 5% of the existing
record in that class.

Chris Carr and the BUB Seven on the world Record braking return run.
Chris started at the 11 mile so by the time he got to the 8 mile he was going
well over 300 mph.
The really cool thing is that about the time I took this picture I could hear
Chris shift into 4th gear.
Once again less than 30 seconds after this picture was taken, the record for
Worlds Fastest Motorcycle would fall for the second time in 48 hours. The
new record, a two way average of 350.884 mph.

One very loud Harley.

Dad and I get a picture with Wink.

They were filming an episode of Biker Build Off at the event.
The Build Off featured 2 of the hottest bike builders in the world.
Roger Goldammer Vs Matt Hotch
Roger won with this very slick bike named Xperamental. This bike started life
as a Honda dirt bike!
This was also when I got my 5 seconds of fame on the show!

Looking West down the track towards Wendover

Looking East towards Floating Mountain.

The track is 11 miles long. Most motorcycles don't need that much track to
get up to full speed so we have 2 courses on 1 track. The full 11 mile course,
and a 5 mile course that runs from the 3 mile to the 8 mile. Depending on
what direction we are running I can be either the 3 mile or the 8 mile.
